Tortillas for Dummies

I feel like when I tell people I’m making my own tortillas they are really impressed, but seriously it’s so easy. The dough takes approximately 30 seconds to make (equal part masa and water), roll into balls, press and cook 5-10 seconds a side. It’s a no brainer. They taste way better and don’t rip like the ones you get at the store. I highly recommend giving it a try.

Recipe For Tortilla Dough (makes 8 small tortillas)

  • 1 cup masa flour (corn flour)
  • 1 cup water

Gradually mix water into masa. If it feels sticky add a bit more masa, until you can shape it into a nice ball. If it seems crumbly add a bit of water. Shape dough into 8 balls. Use a sheet of wax paper in the tortilla press, fold the paper over the ball and press. Carefully transfer onto the palm of your hand and then onto a hot cast iron pan. Cook 5-10 secs per side.
